HERE,
MOVE OVER THERE;
THIS ARTIST KEEPS
THE GARDEN COLOR
FLOWING.

Sporting a meat fork—her favorite
tool—stuffed handle-down into her
calf-high boots, Midwest artist Lark
Kulikowski thoughtfully surveys her
canvas. It’s a work that’s never
finished—a 150-foot-wide perennial
border spanning her suburban
Milwaukee backyard. She constantly
tinkers, adding strokes of color when
the mood strikes. “You can move plants
any time—it’s just a matter of keeping
them watered,” she says.
The learning process began when
Lark and her husband, David, first
moved into their current home. The
look of the prairies inspired Lark to
start a Plains-style garden. There was
just one problem. “I couldn’t stand all
that grass growing up around the
perennials,” Lark says with a laugh. So
she began researching other plants and
garden styles in a quest to create a living
artwork that expresses her love of
continuous color.
